I decided to take a break from crew/sim part of the game and work on exploring planets again. I might spend the week on it.
Its crazy how much different the game looks moving things around. Right now I kinda threw together a lot of things together to make this work. The clouds are probably going to change, at least the parallax layer.
The process is difficult because I didn’t spend enough time learning math as a child. I’m sure there are several ways I could have done this that would have been more efficient. I ended up just taking the percentage of each layer compared to the percent the player has traversed the level and repositioned the layers based upon that percentage. if the character was 50% through the level, then the background would move a similar amount to that percentage. My first rendition was pretty dumb since moving the sky layer 50% put it off the screen pretty quick, so I had to adjust the percentages a little.
Heres a video of the layers in action:
I also worked a little bit on animation (jump animation) as well as sound effects. I’m going to make an effort to get sound effects running as soon as I’m able. Some sound effects are difficult to make in a retro format, while others are pretty easy. I want to get all the easy ones running as soon as I implement a feature.
